Project Overview

This project provides a modified version of the ath9k_htc driver for Atheros-based Wi-Fi adapters (such as the AR9271 chip). The modifications apply a custom regulatory domain which enables higher transmission power limits than the default driver.

Problem Addressed

Many Atheros Wi-Fi adapters using the ath9k_htc driver are limited to a maximum transmission power of 20 dBm due to regulatory restrictions enforced by the Linux kernel. This can reduce the signal range, which is particularly limiting for use cases like penetration testing, long-range connections, or rural environments.

Key Modifications

• Custom regulatory domain that bypasses power limitations
• Increased transmit power up to hardware maximum (typically 30 dBm)
• All channels made available for use
• DFS requirements bypassed for weather radar protection

Modified Components

• config.h: Contains the CONFIG_ATH_USER_REGD=1 definition
• regd.c: Implements the custom regulatory domain logic
• regd.h & regd_common.h: Define regulatory domain constants and structures
• Function name changes: From ath_... to ath9k_... to prevent conflicts

Installation

1. Clone the repository
2. Make the install.sh script executable
3. Run the script which will:
   • Install dependencies
   • Set up the module in /usr/src/
   • Build and install using DKMS
   • Load the ath9k_htc module

How to Set It Up 🛠️
